The question we can hear every day in our dental practice reads – “Doctor, how exactly will my teeth look when the procedure is completed?” Until now we could only show photos of others, which is enough for many patients, but no situation is not the same, and those photos can give a patient an aproximatelly accurate image of what to expect.
Fortunately, dental practice Cvejanovic since June 2015 has at its disposal DSD method that will solve all dilemmas of patients. Digital Smile Design (DSD) is more than a device, more than software, more than dental technique – DSD is a completely new way of planning and implementing dental procedures, the only method that equally involves a patient in the decision making process important for the final outcome of the treatment which is subjected to.
DSD allows dentist to display a patient 2D and 3D images of his jaw and then point how his teeth will look in each of the offered variants of treatment. Also, during the procedure, patient can visualize what is done in a given moment and why, so he is better informed if it is necessary to adopt a further decision. Experience has shown that patients are far easier opting for more complex procedures if there are demonstrated benefits of advanced solutions through DSD and thanks to DSD device they can see why the more complicated procedure is better for them, both for durability and quality of a solutions that they will choose, but also for the visual effect.
It is this visualization why patients are apreciating DSD very much. This method makes the whole relationship between a dentist and a patient transparent, because dentist guarantees to a patient that, at the end of treatment, his teeth will look exactly as shown in an image in the planning stage, whether there are natural teeth or implants. Sure it can come to slight variations due to complications that can not be predicted before the start, but if the patient insists that it does not deviate from the agreed solution, doctor can always change the course of treatment so the patient gets exactly what he wanted. That is the reason why the system bears the name of digital design of smiles – because patient almost apsolutely on his own decides how his smile will look like, and doctor is there to say and show what is possible and what is not. That is why only dentists who are completely confident in their skills are using DSD, because a first-class dentist is required to perform each procedure exactly in the manner intended by the program.
It is essential that patients know that DSD method is used for designing of what is often called a “perfect smile”. This means that it may be required a very complex treatment, with a number of phases, in order to eventually come up with a solution that is presented and designed in DSD software. Sometimes it means carrying dental braces, more surgical interventions and complex prosthetics, but in many cases a project that is planned with DSD method will not be any longer than the one that would a doctor performe without DSD consultations, and how much will be difficult to achieve the smile designed in DSD program doctor can tell the patient already during the first session.
Basically DSD methods are a complex software that analyzes the shape of the face, the condition of the teeth and gums, the proportions of the jaw and mouth, as well as the muscles work, making it possible to predict in advance the results of any proposed dental method, and to show the expected final result, and not just with static images, but also through videos and 3D models. The unique feature of DSD software is that it includes facial contractions and emotons in different everyday situations, so that a patient can see what his face and teeth will look like after completion of treatment when he speaks, when he laughs, when his mouth are closed or when he chews. For example, people with a wide smile, or those who invest more effort in properly articulating speech have different needs than people who are not smiling while speaking, and thus speak more quietly and quickly.
Central step in the DSD method is creation of temporary crowns based on the measurements of the DSD program, in accordance with pre-agreed vision of a final solution. Model of future teeth is made so that it can be installed over existing teeth, so patient can try proposed solution to see how he will look like with it and offer possible suggestions to dentist for further work. This step ensures that in the final stage, when he gets the permanent crowns, patient experience no surprises and that there will be no complicated and expensive corrections after done treatment, because patient was not aware of some of the aspects of his new dental appliances.
All credits for a development of the DSD method go to a Brazilian doctor Christian Coachman, who focused on a problem of communication with patient and adequate visualization of all variants of solutions and needs of a patient during the years of work, from the installation of a single crown to the complete planning of implantation work. Dr. Srdjan Cvejanovic from our dental office completed training at the doctor Coachman and clinic Cvejanovic is among the first in Serbia to own devices needed to use the DSD method. By the end of 2015, all patients who want to be actively involved in the planning of their interventions by using DSD method, even for the smallest interventions, will receive promotional discounts, and in cases of complex procedures DSD will be included as a mandatory part of the treatment without increasing prices compared to the previous period when DSD was not available.
