Cvejanović Dental Clinic is among the first to have obtained the new Digital Smile Design equipment, which will enable patients for the first time to have a say in planning their treatment, as well as to get a complete picture of their future appearance before a single tooth has been treated!
During the month of June 2015, Dr Srdjan Cvejanović successfully completed a course in DSD method in Dubrovnik, including the work on simulators and using the authentic equipment, which has once again confirmed our clinic as being a leader in this part of Europe when it comes to fostering scientific and technological innovations in dentistry. The complete equipment has arrived at our clinic and the first patients will be able to try it out within a few of days.
Digital Smile Design has revolutionized the way dental procedures are planned and carried out. It is the only method to include the patient as the decision maker when it comes to the all important final outcome of the procedure. DSD enables the doctor to show to a patient current 2D and 3D images of their jaws, as well as to render different potential variants of their future smile. This method makes the whole dentist-patient relationship completely transparent because the dentist can guarantee that after the treatment the teeth will look exactly as shown in the images during the planning stage, be it their natural teeth or implants. This is exactly why this system is called Digital Smile Design – because the patient decides what their smile will look like virtually on their own; the dentist simply offers the different possibilities. This is why DSD is used exclusively by dentists who know their trade, since it requires a seasoned professional to operate in order to perform every bit of procedure accurately and according to the plan.
Dr Cvejanović and Dr Coachman
At the heart of DSD lies complex software which analyzes the shape of the face, condition of teeth and gums, jaw to mouth proportion, as well as muscle movement, and it all works towards projecting the outcome of any proposed dental method, as well as to show the end-result, not only through static images, but via videos and 3D models as well. One unique feature of DSD software is that it takes into account the facial muscle contractions and emotions in everyday situations, so that a patient may see what their face and teeth will ultimately look like when they speak, smile, close their mouth or chew. The key step in the DSD method is the fabrication of temporary crowns according to the DSD program using the input created in the planning stage. The model of the future teeth is fabricated in such way that it can be placed over the patient’s natural teeth, so they can it try on and see what it will look like and to potentially make suggestions regarding the final appearance. In this way, when they get the final crowns, patients will have no surprises or need to undergo complicated and expensive correctional procedures because they were not aware of certain aspects of their new dental restoration.
The person credited with developing the DSD method is a Brazilian dentist Christian Coachman, whose focus of many years was the issue of doctor-patient miscommunication and adequate visualization of all proposed solution variants, whether it’s the case of a single crown placement or a full mouth restoration. Dr Coachman himself led the training at Dubrovnik and, upon finishing the training, our Dr Cvejanović has joined the exclusive club of dentists from our region who possess the DSD certificate.
